Missives from the Shop #1 - August

Classes are up and the WC is going in!!

Dear Friends and Craft Seekers,

Welcome to the first issue of Missives from the Shop! I am overjoyed you’ve trusted me with the privilege of writing to you. Thank you!

First: Neighborhood Craft School Classes are available!

As I wrote before, we are starting with a Book/Tablet Stand Workshop, and I’ll be keeping the class size small - just 3 people maximum - for now. It’s perfect for spending time doing something with a couple of old friends, or making new friends! Because we’re using hand tools, people don’t have to wear ear protection or dust masks and goggles. And, you’ll go home with a super-useful little stand that is great for holding cookbooks or tablet computers, art, or can even be used as a cheese board! In my pilot classes, we made our book stands out of salvaged pine (which is what you’ll see in the pictures), but for these paid classes, we’ll be using hardwood. I’ll post some pictures of them as we go.

At the moment, I’ve got classes set up for:

  • Saturday morning, Sept 5th (that’s 2 weeks away!)

  • Wednesday evening, Sept 9th

  • Sunday afternoon, Sept 20th

  • Saturday afternoon, Sept 26th

  • Saturday morning, Oct 3rd.

I’m experimenting with days of the week and times of the day that might work best for people. If there’s a day/time you’d like but don’t see listed, please reach out to me. I’m happy to add classes as my schedule allows!

In the Meantime…

Cindy and I have been very hard at work putting a bathroom in the workshop! Here’s a picture of us, standing in the trench we dug for the pipes for the toilet. At the moment, we’re calling it Keiter’s Crapper. Don’t worry, by the time you come for a class, there will be a floor, a coupla walls, a door, and an actual toilet (with a surprise sink, if all goes well)!

Question Corner:

Kids in the shop??

I received a question about what ages will our workshops be geared towards. Anyone 13 years or older will be welcome to attend regular classes. In the future, I plan to design and offer some classes for younger kids, but they will need to attend with an adult companion and work as a team.

Housekeeping:

This newsletter is going to come out once a month. If you’re interested in keeping closer tabs on our goings-ons, I’ll try to be better about posting to youtube and instagram (links in the footer of this email).

If you like what you see and feel it worthy of sharing, please do spread the word about us: projecthappylife.com

I’ve received some constructive feedback from a couple of kind friends who caught some issues with the way the new Project Happy Life web site displays. Andrew, Ben, and Bernadette, thank you very much! If anyone else catches something, please do send me a note. At the moment this is all just me, so I appreciate the extra sets of eyes.

Last but not least:

I’ve got two classes brewing for the future, but I’m not sure which one to offer next. Which would you like to see sooner: the picture frame class (which will likely be an all-day class), or the forged hook class (which will be about 3 hours)? Feel free to drop me a line and let me know what you think!

And thanks again for being here. I hope to see you in the shop!
